Leader Tarquini penalised for Lessennes WTCR clash
Despite leading the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO heading into the summer break, Gabriele Tarquini will be playing catch-up when battle resumes in China.
Tarquini received a grid penalty following contact with Benjamin Lessennes in the third race of the WTCR Race of Slovakia weekend. It means he will start Race 1 at WTCR Race of China-Ningo on 29 September with a five-place grid demotion in his BRC Racing Hyundai i30 N TCR.
Italian Tarquini, who along with Lessennes was forced to retire following the incident, said: "I was in the middle of the pack and it is always difficult to manage the distance and the pace. There was a big group of cars at Turn 2, Lessennes was inside and was almost spun sideways at a very fast corner. Some other cars catch him from behind and I was pushed just before braking and I touched his car and he went into two other cars, and the car was damaged."
Boutsen Ginion Racing Honda driver Lessennes said: "I lost a good result. My start was okay, but I got a great run through Turn One so I gained a place going down to Turn Three. Then I started to brake and was hit from behind by Gabriele Tarquini. That was my race over. I'm disappointed, especially because I was confident that I could move forwards even more."
