Kevin Hansen closes in on Euro RX title

Sweden's Kevin Hansen could secure the 2016 FIA European Rallycross Championship title today at the penultimate round of the series in Barcelona, if he ends the event 30 points ahead of any of his rivals.

The Peugeot Hansen Academy driver is unbeaten in the first three rounds of Euro RX this season, and needs to score seven points more than Norway's Tord Linnerud to have a chance of winning the title ahead of the final round in Latvia.

Hansen was fastest in both Q1 and Q2 on day one, putting himself into a strong position heading into today's action. "It's nice to race in Euro RX again. I was in World RX two weeks ago and did quite well, so that helps with the speed in my body for sure. We have three wins in a row in Euro RX, hopefully we can get one more today and get a bit closer to wrapping up the championship," said Hansen. "Last year I had a bit of a tough time here in Barcelona, I didn't really find my rhythm but we still managed to get third, so it's nice to be on the pace and setting good times against the World RX guys this weekend."

Hansen has big shoes to fill in rallycross Supercar competition, older brother Timmy is a multiple World RX event winner (and led the overnight standings in Barcelona), while his father Kenneth is a 14-time European Rallycross Champion, making him sport's most successful driver ever. "If I won the championship this weekend or in Latvia, I don't think it will sink in for quite some time. It's so big when I have been here in this paddock for so many years," said Hansen. "To be on the way to winning the championship, I can't find the words to describe it really. To be in this position was a dream a few years ago and now it's a good possibility. We'll just keep pushing."
