Junior WRC in Spain: Solans secures title
Nil Solans claimed his second title of the season after securing the FIA Junior WRC crown in Spain on saturday.
Solans, who lifted the WRC 3 champiponship in Germany in August, required just one bonus point from today's second leg of RallyRACC Catalunya - Rally de España to make it a double success.
In the end, he didn't need that. Closest rival Nicolas Ciamin's failure to secure a bonus point by winning the opening El Montmell speed test meant Solans could not be caught in his Ford Fiesta R2T.
Ciamin retained the category lead in the mixed surface encounter until he crashed and damaged his car's suspension this afternoon. His demise promoted Solans to first and he ended the penultimate leg with a 41.2sec lead over Terry Folb.
"It was wonderful to seal the Junior WRC title to add to the WRC 3 crown," said Solans. "I still have a job to do here though. Winning the rally would bring two more prize drives next season in WRC 2 and so I must remain focused in the final leg."
Germany's Julius Tannert was third, while Dennis Radström returned following yesterday's retirement to hold fourth.
