Junior WRC in spain: Solans’ grand slam
Nil Solans completed a clean sweep of FIA Junior WRC honours by winning the final round in Spain on sunday afternoon.
After clinching the title yesterday, the Spaniard went on to win the three-day mixed surface fixture in his Ford Fiesta R2T, his fourth victory of the season.
In doing so, he also won the final pair of prize drives in next season's WRC 2 category to secure a full campaign of seven rounds in an M-Sport-prepared Fiesta R5.
Solans won the final event of the six-round championship by 1min 33.1sec from Terry Folb, adding the junior crown to the WRC 3 title that he won in Germany in August.
"We had two jobs here this weekend, the first was to take the Junior WRC title and the second was to try and secure the final prize drives. I was confident we could do both as it is my home rally and we've been fast here before," said Solans.
Second was Folb's best result of the season, and he was followed home by Julius Tannert. The German battled several final day issues, including a broken windscreen and intermittent brake problems.
Dennis Rådström returned from an opening-leg accident to finish fourth with Nicolas Ciamin fifth.
Ciamin was the only person who could deny Solans the title, and he led before retiring on Saturday with broken suspension. He returned today to finish fifth.
