Jigsaw Racing hopes to be ‘triumphant' at Race Retro 2014

Jigsaw Racing hopes to be ‘triumphant' at this year's Race Retro when it brings a quartet of Spitfires to the historic motorsport show - including one that isn't made yet! The Triumph specialist is planning on building a Le Mans Spitfire from individual components over the course of the three days, rolling the car out of Race Retro when it closes on Sunday 23rd February.

They will also have three Triumphs on display in the halls of Stoneleigh Park from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd February, including the original ‘ADU1B' 1964 Le Mans Spitfire as well as two replicas. Jigsaw is aiming to enter the trio as a team into the 2014 Le Mans Classic, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Standard Triumph entry to Le Mans.

1964 saw Standard Triumph build and enter a number of Spitfires into International competition over the 1964/5 race seasons. Initially preparing, in 1964, three cars (ADU 1B, 2B and 3B) to compete in the Le Mans 24 hour race, and four cars (ADU 5B, 6B, 7B and ADU467B) for the European tarmac rallies including the Alpine, Tour de France, Geneva, Monte Carlo and Coupe de Alpes.

1965 was to see an additional two cars prepared, with ADU4B competing at Le Mans and AVC654B, the left hand drive car of Simo Lampinen, for the European rallies. Unfortunately the competition department was disbanded in 1966 and the competition Spitfires were of no further use to Standard Triumph.

On the Live Rally Stage in the grounds of Stoneleigh, the 1964/5 ex-works Triumph Spitfire once driven by Terry Hunter and Rob Slotemaker will be in action. With the registration plate

‘ADU7B', the car also celebrates its 50th anniversary in European competition.

Group B and C rally cars will join in the action on the purpose built Live Rally Stage on Saturday and Sunday which will also host the start of the Winter Challenge that will see over 20 drivers head off on a five-day journey to Monte Carlo.

Adult tickets for Race Retro, sponsored by Peter James Insurance, start at £20 in advance with children's tickets at £5 for Friday and Saturday and free on Sunday. Car parking is free.
