Hyundai prepares for final 2017-spec tests

Hyundai Motorsport has confirmed it will commence a test schedule on the final specification of its 2017 WRC challenger during the build-up towards the Tour de Corse.

After running five months of initial development using a mule car and a prototype verison in private testing, Hyundai will unleash its latest configuration of the 2017 i20 WRC in preparation for next year's regulations revamp.

In 2017 WRC engine power output will be raised from 300bhp to 380bhp - equivalent to WTCC engines - while cars can be fitted with a larger turbo and made lighter. Aerodynamic and diffuser rules have been relaxed to give teams greater scope while active central differentials can be used for the first time since 2010.

Hyundai, who is reverting back to a three-door model for 2017, will allow Hayden Paddon and Dani Sordo to trial the new car along with test driver Kevin Abbring having enjoyed a maiden outing after Rallye Deutschland.

With Rally China cancelled the drivers and team have been handed a larger timescale in between WRC action with the next round, Tour de Corse, scheduled for the 30th September - 2nd October.

"We have been preparing for next season with ongoing development of our 2017 car," Hyundai team principal Michel Nandan said. "The next test will be with the final specification so it will be an important part of our preparatory phase."
