Huff: We need to make another step in WTCR
Rob Huff admits there’s more work to do to turn his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR into a winner in the 2019 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO.
Like his team-mates Mehdi Bennani, Johan Kristoffersson and Benjamin Leuchter, the 2012 World Touring Car champion has yet to run at the front in WTCR / OSCARO this season due to a lack of outright performance from the Sébastien Loeb Racing-run Golf.
But after a positive WTCR Race of Hungary – Huff finished seventh twice on his way to scoring in all three races and also claimed the TAG Heuer Best Lap Trophy – the Briton insists there is every reason to be positive.
“We’ve made really good progress,” said Huff. “It’s not exactly where I want to be, to be fighting that hard just for seventh, but ultimately that’s the way the championship is now.
“We need to raise our level, which we’ve done since Marrakech, and we need to make another step ahead of Slovakia, which we know from last year was our nemesis track. But I’m really happy with the team, and the job the guys did with the car [in Hungary].”
Of the 5.922-kilometre Slovakia Ring, Huff added: “This is probably one of the most technical tracks we go to; it’s a long lap, but it’s a fantastic, flowing track and you can really get into a good rhythm. You know you’ve done a good job when you get every corner right, which is challenging as a driver. It’s quite easy to make a mistake when you’re pushing on the limit.”
