Gago sets the early ERC Junior pace on his return
The ERC Junior field is through the first stage of round two of the series, the Azores Airlines Rallye, with Diego Gago heading the field on his return to action.
Gago was quickest among the ERC Junior drivers in this morning's Qualifying Stage when others said they didn't want to be quickest to avoid running first on the road among the two-wheel drive cars and sweeping a new line for the smaller cars. The promising Portuguese driver showed that was no issue on SS1 however, beating 2015 Azores class winner Chris Ingram to the best time by 2.6 seconds.
Marijan Griebel was a further 1.2s behind, 0.7s ahead of a three-way tie for fourth between his Opel team-mate Julius Tannert, Peugeot driver Nikolay Gryazin and M-Sport-run Ford driver Steve Røkland. Debutant Joonas Tokee was seventh, with the points leader Łukasz Pieniążek only eighth.
