Fiesta festival in the ERC in the Azores
The Ford Fiesta R5 swept the podium for the first time in the FIA European Rally Championship on last week's Azores Airlines Rallye.
The podium lock-out for the M-Sport-built machine - thanks to the efforts of Ricardo Moura, Alexey Lukyanuk and Kajetan Kajetanowicz - incidentally came just one round after the ŠKODA Fabia R5 dominated the top four places on the SEAJETS Acropolis Rally. That had been the first clean sweep of an ERC podium by one car since 2012.
M-Sport was only prevented from matching that 1-2-3-4 when Jaroslav Orsák - making his debut in the Fiesta R5 - lost fourth to Citroën driver Dávid Botka to a time penalty for being late into the final stage (he had to replace a flat tyre).
As part of another large R5 entry in the ERC, there were 15 versions of the Fiesta R5 competing in the Azores. Luís Rego - another driving the car for the first time - finished only 17.2 seconds away from the top-four in seventh overall, while Ricardo Teodósio finished ninth.
Moura's victory made the Fiesta the first model of car to win twice in the ERC in 2016, after the first three rounds were split between Ford, Citroën and ŠKODA.
