Ferrari expecting less emotional Vettel in 2018 after F1 title loss

Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne expects Sebastian Vettel to learn from his title loss in 2018 and be less emotional next year.

Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne is expecting to see less of Sebastian Vettel's emotional side through the 2018 Formula 1 season after seeing tensions flare during his title loss to Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton this year.

Vettel missed out on a chance to win his fifth F1 title and Ferrari's first since 2007 after losing out to Hamilton with two races to spare despite the team having the quickest car through the early part of the season, allowing him to lead the standings for more races than his rival.

Tensions flared in Baku when Vettel made contact with Hamilton behind the safety car, acting as a turning point in the title race.

Speaking at Ferrari's Christmas dinner in Maranello, Marchionne was full of praise for Vettel, who recently signed a new three-year deal with the Italian marque, but said he hoped to see less of his emotional side next year.

"Sebastian Vettel is a guy who studies a lot, studies himself and is committed, therefore, I think that we will see less of his emotional side," Marchionne said.

"I think he has learned enough. Plus, there were plenty of opportunities for him to get annoyed, as he's had a couple of rather difficult seasons, this year and the previous one.

"I continue to maintain we have an obligation towards these drivers, to give them a car with which they can race the others.

"I think we gave them a great car in 2017 and so, from now on, it's down to him."
