F1 US GP: Verstappen expecting Red Bull gains in Texas
Max Verstappen has echoed his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo in suggesting Red Bull is well positioned for a podium challenge in the United States Grand Prix following a strong run in free practice.
With Ricciardo riding high in second place, Verstappen's best super-soft run was only good enough for fifth place in comparison, just under a second down on the top spot.
Nevertheless, while Verstappen expects to improve over a single lap, he was encouraged by his long run pace in the RB12, adding that he was catching the Ferrari ahead of him running a similar programme before a red flag was deployed to clear debris on track.
"My short run was not fantastic, which is why we changed a lot on the car back to what we were using in FP1 and that was quite a lot of difference.
"The red flag is the same for everyone but after that we got some good laps in and long run pace is pretty positive. I had a Ferrari in front of me but I was catching him in the long runs, so I guess that is positive."
