F1 Italian GP: Magnussen ‘fit to race’ subject to FIA approval

Kevin Magnussen has been cleared to travel to Monza after undergoing more medical tests in the wake of his spectacular high-speed accident at the Belgian Grand Prix, though he still requires final FIA approval to race.

The Dane lost control of his Renault RS16 at the top of Eau Rouge on lap six of the Spa-Francorchamps race and impacted the barriers hard, leaving him with an injured ankle. Taken to local hospital, Magnussen was diagnosed with a cut to the ankle, with further checks in his native Denmark revealing no more significant injuries.

As such, Magnussen is confident he will be able to take the start of the Italian Grand Prix, which gets underway on Friday September 2nd, but will be subject to a final medical clearance by the FIA to get the final green light.

"I'm feeling much better, which is very good news. I've had several checks that show I am fit to race in Monza and I am sure I will be in the car this weekend. We were running in the top ten in Belgium and I'm very motivated to repeat this again in Italy."

Renault declined to comment on whether it has decided on a potential substitute should Magnussen be unable to drive. It's most recent reserve, Esteban Ocon, has since joined Manor Racing as race driver.
