F1 Belgian GP: Alonso hit with multiple Belgian GP penalties

Fernando Alonso will start the Belgian Grand Prix towards the back of the grid after a water leak during FP1 at Spa-Francorchamps forced McLaren-Honda to change his entire power unit.

With Honda bringing an upgraded engine to Belgium having spent seven development tokens over the summer, Alonso failed to get out on track in FP1 after suffering a water leak.

With the issue traced to a problem with the ERS, McLaren-Honda have opted to swap out the entire unit ahead of FP2.

As such, Alonso will incur at least 35 positions worth of penalties, almost certainly placing him on the back row of the grid this weekend.

The news will come as a minor boost to Lewis Hamilton, who is facing a 15 place grid penalty for the time being after undergoing an engine change before the weekend. However, Mercedes has hinted it may conduct more changes to incur more penalties.

Additionally, Sauber's Marcus Ericsson has received a new engine and will be dropped 10 positions on the grid.
