F1 Abu Dhabi GP: Massa bids farewell to F1 with points’ finish

After being robbed of the chance to reach the chequered flag in an emotional Brazilian Grand Prix two weeks ago, Felipe Massa successfully completed his F1 career in Abu Dhabi with a run to ninth place.

Making his 250th and final F1 start, Massa qualified tenth but would get ahead of former Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso early on before holding position to the chequered flag to secure two more points for himself and the Williams team.

To be replaced by rookie Lance Stroll for the 2017 F1 season, Massa was delighted to end his career in the top flight with something to show for.

"I'm really proud to have been fighting up to the last lap of the race in the same way I fought in the first lap of my career! I want to say thank you to everyone - everyone who has been with me all the way, racing together. Thank you to the fans and to Williams, who I will keep supporting in the future!

"Thank you to everyone who has been part of everything I have been through. I have finished my career with my head up, the same way I started my career.

With Massa receiving his race car as a personal gift from the Williams team, the Brazilian says he will continue to race full-time in 2017 but is yet to decide where. It is understood he has offers to race in Formula E, DTM and the World Endurance Championship.
