F1 Abu Dhabi GP: Jenson Button retires from ‘final’ F1 race

Jenson Button's title-winning Formula 1 career appears to have ended on a disappointing note after he retired on lap 12 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The 2009 world champion was starting what many - including the man himself - expect will be his last race in F1 prior to a sabbatical and was running well early on, getting as high as eighth during the pit-stop window.

However, he'd damage his front suspension when he clipped a high kerb at turn 12, forcing him to come into the pit-lane to retire.

"I really don't know what the problem is. Something failed on the car, which never happens to us. It's a massive strength of our team, things don't fail, but it did today of all days! But it's done.

"I've always said you can't change the past so live in the moment which is right now and I'm going to get a nice cold beer after this interview."

"I enjoyed today massively. The race was short obviously, but I enjoyed everything else. It's just sad for my fans and supporters really that I wasn't able to finish."

Should this indeed prove to be his final race as expected, Button ends his career with 305 F1 starts to his name over 17 years, including one world title, 15 wins and 60 podiums.
