Ex-Honda F1 engine consultant Gilles Simon returns to FIA

Former Honda Formula 1 engine consultant Gilles Simon, who left the Japanese company on the eve of this season, has rejoined the FIA in a senior technical role.

The engine specialist previously enjoyed spells at Renault, Peugeot and most famously Ferrari, before becoming the FIA's technical and powertrain director in 2010.

A subsequent switch to the stillborn Pure project in 2011 was followed by a move to join Honda as the manufacturer prepared for its return to F1 in 2015.

He helped the company make progress after a difficult first campaign back, but relations got strained earlier this year in the wake of troubles with its 2017 power unit.

With an all-new concept this year not resulting in the step forward hoped for, and disagreements over how best to respond to the difficulties, Simon quit Honda shortly after the disastrous first 2017 test.

His departure left McLaren even more frustrated with its engine situation, because it was felt essential for Honda's progress that it made use of more outside consultants like Simon.

After six months out of the sport, Simon has now been appointed as FIA technical director.

He will work to help develop all FIA championships and evaluate new technical solutions that will help push championships in the direction the governing body wants.
