El Condór in all its glory

After a wretched weekend weatherwise, the sunshine returned to Xion Rally Argentina just in time to see the iconic El Cóndor speed test in all its beauty on sunday.

Few locations on the WRC’s global tour match the rugged and rocky mountain speed test for sheer spectacle, and it certainly lived up to its reputation as one of the sport’s classics during the rally’s two visits.

Police estimated the attendance at 75,000 fans, with more than 8,000 cars parked in the stage itself. Spectators started queueing on the public roads outside on Thursday evening, ready for access to open at midday on Friday.

Such was its popularity that the stage was closed to fans from 10am on Saturday, just under 24 hours before the first car roared into action on the long and spectacular uphill climb.

“They can take Christmas out of the calendar, but nobody can take Sunday in El Condór away from us,” one excited fan told wrc.com, whilst precariously perched on top of a massive roadside rock near the finish.
