Double ERC Junior champion Griebel reflects on bitter-sweet relationship with Rally Liepāja
Marijan Griebel returns to the scene of one of his greatest career triumphs when he contests Rally Liepāja later this week.
Although the German’s first two outings on the Latvian gravel event resulted in sizeable crashes, his 2016 appearance ended him winning the FIA ERC3 Junior Championship title following a final-round showdown with then ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team team-mate Chris Ingram
“I have vivid memories from Rally Liepāja, having competed there three times,” Griebel told Lvrally.com. “Unfortunately, my first two attempts resulted in two of my largest crashes. That is all in the past, though, and I have warm memories of the last time I competed in Liepāja. In 2016, I was fighting for the ERC Junior title, and I needed to win in order to become champion. At the end, that is what I did, winning by a few seconds. It all could have ended differently, but I had become champion! That is still one of the best days in my career, something that I will always remember.”
Griebel will return in a Baumschlager Rallye & Racing ŠKODA Fabia R5 when he will be a contender for outright victory on the FIA European Rally Championship counter.
