Bennani: hard work needed to make WTCR Volkswagen Golf win again
Mehdi Bennani says work is needed to up the performance of the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR at the next round of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO in Hungary.
Bennani and his Sébastien Loeb Racing team-mates Rob Huff, Johan Kristoffersson and Benny Leuchter, all struggled for qualifying pace on the Circuit Moulay El Hassan last weekend.
While his capture of the TAG Heuer Best Lap Trophy for setting the Marrakech event’s fastest race lap offered some hope, the Moroccan said there’s work to do.
“We need to work but I trust on Volkswagen Motorsport’s power,” said Bennani. “We struggled a lot, all the Volkswagen drivers. We tried everything, we changed the set-up but nothing was going in the right way. We did our best, we were always pushing to the limit but it was not my best result in Marrakech.”
Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets confirmed help is at hand for Bennani and his team-mates.
“In qualifying we were lacking speed,” said Smeets. “In the race things had clearly got better, but we will use the break before the next race in Hungary and analyse exactly what was wrong in qualifying.”
