Azores production star Rego makes R5 step in the ERC

Azores Airlines Rallye specialist Luís Rego will make his first ever start in an R5 car on this week's FIA European Rally Championship event.

Rego, a native of the Azores, has driven a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX since 2012 and has starred on his home event in that time, finishing eighth overall and second in the Production Cup in 2013 and then fifth overall and top of his class in 2014. He was due for second in ERC2 last year when he stopped after the final stage having lost brake fluid.

The 25-year-old has also finished runner-up for the last three seasons in the season-long Azorean championship to Ricardo Moura, but he now joins the two-time ERC podium finisher in being behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta R5. The car is brand new from M-Sport and he will drive it in anger for the first time this week.
